Welcome offers and wagering requirements: a guide for UK players

Many UK-licensed casinos offer a welcome bonus or free spins to new customers. This guide explains the main types of offers and what wagering requirements mean, so you can read terms and conditions with confidence. We do not recommend any specific offer; always check the operator’s site for current details and eligibility.

What is a welcome bonus?

A welcome bonus is a promotional offer aimed at new customers when they sign up or make their first qualifying action. In the UK, these are typically described in pounds sterling (GBP) and may take the form of a match bonus (the operator matches a portion of your first qualifying amount), free spins on selected slots, or a combination of both. The exact mechanics—how much you need to qualify, which games count, and what you must do before withdrawing bonus winnings—are set out in the operator’s terms and conditions. No two offers are identical, so it is essential to read the T&Cs before you opt in.

Types of welcome offers

Match bonuses: The operator matches a percentage of your first qualifying amount up to a cap. For example, “100% match up to £50” means if you qualify with £50, you receive £50 in bonus funds (subject to terms). The cap and percentage vary by operator. Match bonuses are almost always subject to wagering requirements.

Free spins: You receive a set number of spins on one or more slot games. Winnings from free spins may be paid as bonus credit (then subject to wagering) or as real cash with no wagering—this varies by operator and should be clearly stated in the terms. Some casinos offer “wager-free” spins where winnings are withdrawable subject only to any general account terms.

Combined offers: Many welcome packages combine a match bonus and free spins. The order in which you must use them and the games that count toward wagering are set by each operator. Again, the only way to know exactly what applies is to read the full terms.

What are wagering requirements?

Wagering requirements (also called playthrough or rollover) are the rules that determine when bonus funds or bonus winnings can be withdrawn. Typically, you must wager the bonus (and sometimes the qualifying amount) a set number of times before the bonus converts to withdrawable cash. For example, “35x bonus” means you must stake 35 times the bonus amount on qualifying games. If the bonus is £50, that is £1,750 in total stakes. Only bets on games that count toward wagering contribute; table games and certain slots often contribute at a lower rate or not at all. Time limits often apply: you may have 7, 14 or 30 days to complete wagering, after which the bonus and any associated winnings may be forfeited.

Why wagering matters

Wagering requirements protect the operator from bonus abuse and set a clear bar for converting bonus money into real money. From a player’s perspective, they mean that a “£100 bonus” is not the same as £100 in your pocket—you have to meet the terms first. High multipliers (e.g. 50x) or short time limits make it harder to complete wagering. Some operators now offer low or zero wagering on selected promotions; that is a selling point and should be clearly stated in the terms. We always recommend reading the full T&Cs and, if in doubt, playing without taking a bonus so that your own funds are not tied to wagering rules.

Eligibility and fairness

Welcome offers are usually restricted to new customers only, one per person, household or device (as defined by the operator). Operators may use identity and age verification to enforce this. Bonus abuse—using multiple accounts or circumventing terms—can result in the closure of accounts and confiscation of winnings. UKGC-licensed sites must treat customers fairly and set out terms in plain language. If you are unsure whether you qualify or how wagering works, contact the operator’s support or skip the bonus and play with your own funds only.

Where to find current offers

We compare operators and mention headline offers in GBP on our homepage and in our operator reviews. We do not guarantee that any offer is still available or unchanged. Always confirm the current bonus, wagering multiplier, game restrictions and time limits on the operator’s own website before you sign up or opt in. Gambling should be entertainment; never chase losses or spend more than you can afford. For support with problem gambling, see our Play safe page.
